Desserts First

Hope you are all having a wonderful evening! I’m feeling fantastic tonight. I had a good dinner – a salad of fresh mixed spring greens, grape tomatoes, purple onions, carrots, and grilled chicken and a fabulous, super delicious mango for dessert. Plus, I had a really good workout, and I am off work tomorrow, so I have a four-day weekend. What could get better than that!

Dessert, of course! I think this is a good topic to bridge the gap between self-care and nutrition. Dessert can kind of fit both of these categories if you’re doing it right. And I want to make sure you are doing it the best way possible so that you can indulge in dessert and not feel guilty about it. I’m not saying go eat a cheescake or a pint of Haagen Daas, but there is no reason why you can’t have a healthy dessert.

Almost any decadent dessert recipe you can find can be converted to a healthier version. If you happen to be trying to lose weight, you may want smaller portions of desserts, or you will want to opt for desserts that are fruit based (like a nice fruit salad with some ricotta or a grain-free tart). If you are grain-free, many cakes, cookies, muffins, and sweet breads can be converted using almond, coconut, or hazlenut flour. Substitute yucky vegetable oil with coconut oil. You can use avacadoes for whipping up a delicious chocolate mousse with a light, fluffy texture that is to die for! If you are dairy free, you can use coconut or almond milk instead of cow’s milk,  and you can make a wonderful whipped cream from coconut cream. Raw honey and real maple syrup are superfoods that contain lots of nutrients you need, so substitute white sugar with these sweeteners. Once you get used to doing this, you won’t even want as much sweetener in your foods. Dark chocolate is good for you. Eat it!

Notice how you can use healthy fats, nut flours, and fruits to make desserts that to me, are so gourmet, they should be on TV or something. Now, let me share a couple other things with you. I said these desserts are healthy versions of regular desserts, but I did not say they were low cal! So…if you are on a mission to slash calories, which you will learn from me is not a good way to lose weight, then you will want to be prudent with eating these desserts. However, as I also said, there is no reason to deprive yourself of all goodies all the time. That’s where the self-care comes in. Sometimes, it is so comforting to eat a sweet, creamy treat that you really should just do it. Don’t feel bad about it…just eat it. When it’s a healthier version you can eat it with a clear conscience. And when I stopped counting calories and obsessing over the scale, that’ when I actually lost some weight. It’s a lot of work to be that fanatical over numbers. The best part is, now I know what I should eat, so I eat it. I can help you get there…won’t you join me on this journey?
