Eating Healthy On A Budget

Hi Everyone! I hope you all have enjoyed the first day of summer as much as I did! I left work early, came home, got a few chores done around the house, and lounged on my deck with a giant glass of lemon water. I watered my pots of herbs and mint, took a few photos for my Facebook page, and just generally enjoyed the sunshine with my dogs! Then we cooked some yummy cheeseburgers topped with raw smoked swiss on the grill and had hand cut french fries from the oven. They are so good when you drizzle them with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic pepper! This meal only took about 15 minutes to prepare and less than a half hour to cook…but it was soooo good and really hit the spot on a hot first day of summer!

I know that I’ve talked a lot this week about how to afford healthy food, and how to fit this cooking stuff into a busy schedule. I want to wrap up this week by just sharing a little bit about how I was able to make this work in my family. Changing your lifestyle is a big step. It often feels overwhelming. I’m an all or nothing kind of gal, so when I want to do something, I want to do it ALL.RIGHT.NOW! I strongly recommend that you don’t think like this when changing from a standard American diet to a clean, healthy diet. It is best to do this a few steps at a time. Baby steps, in fact…

Start slow. Start with the journal that I discussed earlier in the week, tracking what you eat and how much you are spending on  your food and drink. Then start building your healthy pantry (we also covered this in an earlier blog series). Once you have your staple foods in place, start including the foods we have discussed this week.  Plan your menu, create your grocery list, then shop for what you have written on your list. Keep adding new foods to your list every week. Don’t be afraid to try new things. As you increase your healthy foods, you will reduce your unhealthy foods. Over the course of several weeks, you will find yourself learning more and finding what works best for you and your family. Soon, you will have a completely healthy diet. When you have achieved a healthy diet, there isn’t any reason why you can’t splurge once in a while and have a treat or go out for a nice dinner at your favorite restaurant. You will find that your life will improve significantly.
